Fresh water from an unclean well...

I forget where the phrase comes from. It's probably Biblical...

"Fresh water from an unclean well..."

Basically it's a phrase which exposes some BS hypocritical stuff.

Sorta like this stuff I read from time to time about radio and my industry written by someone who doesn't work in the industry anymore, but for some reason, thinks they're an expert.

See, this dude, he likes to rip the industry apart, and basically, daily, say that radio, as we know it, is left for dead.

Then, he offers insights as to how to fix it, although he's not worked in radio for decades.

And then, the dude turns around and tries to act all motivational as if he's some guru who knows anything about motivation.

You know who I'm talking about.

He's not the Pope.

He's not an expert.

He's far from visionary and he's clearly anything but disruptive.

Most of what you read from this guy... is more fictional than a movie produced by Disney before the Pixar Braintrust took the studios over after the merger.

Walt Disney told better stories.

Always remember - those who can do, and those who can't, teach... or just spout BS from the sidelines while we who can - do.

At any rate, be careful drinking 'fresh water from an unclean well...' because you'll typically end up with a healthy case of the $hits.

ICYMI: Apple just went vintage to remind people where it's heart... is.

Some of these APPLE purists have reminded me of an expression...

... about bleeding in six colors.

Right here... I see six colors. In this ad released today, for a split second...

... I see 'em.

That's all I need to see.

Because, I too, bleed in six colors. Just like any misfit, or any rebel...

I've not said 'HI' in a minute.

So... hi.

The cool thing about this gig is when you see someone get back into the game who really should be in the game because they truly do love....

... what they do.

I am, indeed, pretty pumped to read about Mike Killabrew, my old boss, or, for non-radio types, Program Director, at 98ROCK in Tampa.

For the brief time in the history of that station which I was there, replacing a monkey, resetting the palate after the reign of a Sponge,  and a few other folk who had attempted to do the same thing... he was the guy I talked with daily about what was right, and what was wrong, that I was doing in a format which required me to re-learn how to ride a bike.

Let me tell you... it wasn't easy.

All the typical 'things'  I knew to be true about radio had a decidedly different twist. I'd say it's like adding a double shot of whatever to whatever else you would usually drink with a shot. It required a bit of un-learning, learning, listening, and realizing you don't know everything... although, I will say that a great many 'ideas' and 'theories' did indeed hold true about radio and what fans want from a station...

Things in this game do what they do and they did what they did in the WXTB project... but the best thing about this game is this: There are those in positions of power and leadership who understand the meaning of the words "loyalty" and "dedication" and "hard work" and who just generally get it.

Mike Killabrew gets it. And he's got a chance now to show this to so many once again.

And it's in no short order because some other people get it... and understand the meaning of some words others take for granted...

Brad Hardin. On that subject... enough said.

I don't know about you, but I love a comeback story. I love the story of people who do when others think they can't. To paraphrase Jay-Z, I love it when someone, "comes back like Jordan, wearing the 45..." when it's "not to play games with you..." but to "maim" you...

Mike... go blow your competitors to smithereens. You've taken one for the team.

Now, it's time to say "I came, I saw, I conquered..."

I can't wait to see you get it done.

SNOW DAYS: Joe Daddio made this and it should go viral!!!

And it should!!!

Leaders have this 'presence' thing...

Something funny just happened.

I'm sitting in a production studio where I work and the door opens... I have my back to the door and I hear this voice...

"Hello Toby Knapp..."

I just smile and say the name of this person who walked in...

She's not based here anymore, but has a home and family here, so she sometimes works from our building - especially when the weather gets ridiculous and whatnot.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is that leaders have this presence. It's not the same for all, some have more presence than others, but generally when I'm in the room with a leader, I sense this presence. It's unique to each person, unique to each leader and it certainly evolves over time.

We chatted about life, Kyla, industry-related stuff... it's like she never left...

Sometimes, I miss that presence. Because presence is, I think, a part of the chemistry which makes any organization great. We all add our presence to the total team makeup for a time and that's what helps to breed success.

But --- like any organism --- we continue to grow. New leaders evolve. Other leaders move on toward what they need to grow into as they continue to become... And new a new presence adds itself to the fold.

Adds itself. Never replaces. Because once you've added your DNA -- your "stuff" to something... it's forever changed. You've forever left a mark.

I guess that's the fabric of what they'd call building a dynasty.

Here's to your presence...

There are times when it's good to remember...

At times, I pause to remember... that it is good to remember that everything we have, we have because we've worked really hard.

Really, really hard.

We've worked hard to get what we have now. We didn't always have it. No one is just 'born' with it these days. Even those who are... have to prove that they're worthy of it.

And so we go to work.

We work tirelessly. We press on, driven. We look at what we think is impossible and we say to ourselves, "we'll find a way."

The world says we won't be able to do it. That we won't be able to pull it off. That we can try but that - for what ever reason - we aren't good enough to get what we want.

Some say we're dreaming, and that we'll never do better than right now.

But... they say that because they're not dreamers. They just do. What they're told. What they need to do. What their 'checklist' of 'best practices' says they need to do.

We, however, dream.

Some can't understand it. It's not that they don't want to, surely they would if they could.

They're just not us.

It's not what they're programmed to do.

Because we're not like them.

We dream. And then, we do.

And that doing... is the work. The hard... really hard work... which we do... which makes dreams come true.

Keep dreaming.
