So one of my sources and I were talking today about a reality which is causing straight people - particularly straight women - to have a bad rap.


Apparently, Straight Chicks aren't tipping when they come with their girlfriends to the fully nude gay clubs in DC. And some gay dancers and bar workers and patrons have about had it. So we investigated it...

Cee Lo Green HATES the edited F**K YOU!

Talked to Cee Lo Green today... he's pretty much not happy he had to go and make an edit of his song for his label. I guess when it comes to selling records, you still need airplay, and we can't go playing some song loaded with bombs, right?

Anyway, he's awesome.

Lady Gaga bares her soul...

This is a really cool story.

When listening back to the audio, with all the salaciousness and whatnot that we associate with Lady Gaga, I was struck by this exchange which, at least to me, gave me a look into her soul. Lady Gaga isn't just some flash in the pan pop star, she's someone who is driven, educated, meticulous, is very aware of her core audience and fans and who is evolving them just as she continues to evolve as an artist...

They say you come full circle in life. I bet that's how it will go for Gaga. The dance hall audiences she has right now will be gathering in coffee shops at some point because that's where she's leading her audience. It's not disposable to her... it's art...

and it all began in some coffeshops in New York City.

Off air...


Every so often, some stuff will come up and it makes for interesting discussion here at the office.


When it does, it generally has no place on air here at the station. I mean, it's sometimes political, often times controversial, and honestly, it can get pretty heated. It's been happening more and more lately, and it happened today.

So, today, I taped it.

We got all fired up over a story in a DC blog about tea partiers coming to Washington DC and, well, it deserved to be talked about So we did.

It's with this introduction that I welcome you to explore [ off | air ].

That's the working name for these podcasts, I guess. We reserve the right to change it or whatever. All rights reserved.

Generally they involve Tim Staskewicz, from our online team, who is a political junkie like me; DM, who is what I call the digital architect of aural stimulation here at the station and sometimes interns or anyone else who has a point of view.

Nothing is right. Nothing is wrong. Everyone has a position, and while some are more obvious than others, it gives you a look into what we do and think here at the station. On everything. From politics, sports, and more. Basically, if it's stuff that pisses people off at a bar or restuarant, or if it's the stuff you're not supposed to bring up on dates, we talk about it.

Thinking out loud...


I was looking back over some blog posts from different nights like tonight. 

You know, nights where Kyla is going back to mom for mom's turn tomorrow, and I'm all introspective, and moody, happy, yet sad, optimistic yet in need of some sort of reassurance.

But tonight, it's not like that. 


In fact, tonight, I'm proud. And confident. And thankful. Blessed. 

Sure, I'm a little bit emotional. She's the love of all loves of my life. The ONE thing in life I've tried hard to do right, even though I know I've not been perfect. She's the greatest thing I've ever been a part of, she's part of me, and is my own piece of heaven on earth. 

But, as she sleeps, and as I go through the pre-flight back to mom checklist, I'm proud. So proud.


I'm proud that she's eating mostly organic foods now, and never really noticed the switch. That's not to say she doesn't eat some non-organic and healthy stuff, but I really believe one of the reasons she's so resilient is because she eats relatively healthy.

I mean, aside from the occasional Georgetown Cupcake (that's DC Cupcake to you who don't get it, but who might get it sorta...)


I'm proud that she's so smart and clever... and is in love with discovering new things. 

I'm proud that she's learning that she can be accountable for making her bed, putting her things away, cleaning up and being responsible, knowing that she'll earn rewards if she works hard and stays focused.
I'm proud of the job her mom and I are doing together, and I'm proud of the way she and my new friend of the girl persuasion have gotten to know each other and are building a relationship. 

I'm proud that she's learning that she can't get away with some things, that tantrums don't get results, and I'm proud that she'd rather read than watch TV, although, she does love a good game of Cash Cab every now and then :)

I'm proud of her heart, soul and spirit -- and the beautiful little girl she's becoming. 



So, tonight, I'm not listening to emotional adult pop drinking wine thinking that "I'll miss this one" and "oooh I'm sad..."

No, quite conversely, I'm sitting here thinking how proud I am that we're co-parenting such an amazing little girl. That we're managing to do it in a way that I think makes some people crazy, but that I know makes sure that Kyla is always the center of what we do, and is always at the core of our decision making process. It's amazing. I read stories and hear tales of families who fail miserably at co-parenting and whatnot, and again, we're not perfect, but I'm proud of the fact that I think we're doing okay.
I'm excited for Kyla. I remember first grade. I told her tonight that now's when the fun starts. I'm thankful I'm going to be along for the ride and to be a part of it with her. 



Kyla has made me a better man. Not perfect, but better. In all ways that count, she's made me better. And I'm proud to be her father. 

Tomorrow, she'll hop on a flight - by herself - for her next adventure. I'll see her in a couple of weeks, and we'll no doubt talk more often than not. I've already dropped some postcards in the mail for her, too. 

It's hard to believe that for me, the adventure of being a daddy is closing in on seven years old. 



Wow. Time flies. 

Goodnight, friends. As you know, after she leaves, I've got a busy weekend ahead.

An open letter to Mike Klein mostly...

... and maybe Tommy, but mostly Mike.

Dear Mike (mostly) and maybe Tommy, but mostly Mike,

I just wanted to apologize in advance.

It's never an easy thing to wake up the next morning, stinking of booze and reeking of sweat, burnt tires and charcoal. And when you wander to the bathroom in your RV and discover that your face looks like one of them graffitti-Picasso painting things, you might begin to wonder why you even made the trek with a bunch of men, in RV's, to a field near a NASCAR track.

So, on behalf of everyone, We're sorry. It was not Bob Weil's idea. Or Ricks. I think it was Franklin's. Mostly Franklins, but that's only because Brother Alex can't come this year.

His girlfriend has him by the balls so he's got to go to one of them there tropical countries and whatnot.

Anyway.

Take solace in the fact that cameras, flips, and such are pretty much forbidden and they get broken if you pull some out. I know this might be hard for some of us, since we need to turbocharge our ihearting of radio and stuff, but it is what it is, I guess.

And bring some sharpies. Or some no-doze. Or some other stuff to keep yourself awake. And bring some soap. And some towels. Trust me on the soap thing.

But whatever you do, don't fall asleep with your shoes on.

So, in closing, Mike Klein, I'm sorry. I know you don't like to be in your market on the weekends, and I can't wait to see you, but you might start to think that your home market isn't such a bad place since no one there draws stuff on your chin, or cheek, which might resemble certain manparts. And I apologize to Tommy, but, mostly Mike, because drawing on Mike's chin is more funny than drawing on Tommy.

Besides, he's like a pretty big PD now at a big station, and we don't want him to get into any trouble.

Anyway, here's to friends, who do what we all mutually love, spending some time away, recreating and enjoying life, having fun and living this life we've been allowed to have. I hope that you all get the chance to do what we get to do... and to the people who let me in back in the day a few years ago, thank you...

DC Housewives...

Again, I want to point out that there are some amazingly dynamic women, and people here, but the thing I again find so ridiculous is that the Salahi's have nothing.

The winery is closed. The Salahi's are broke. They're not paying any bills. It's pretty ridiculous actually. So, their "house" wasn't actually their house. It was a borrowed house. The elaborate BS set up at the barn where they did some horseback riding? Yeah more BS. The amount of ridiculousness with these two is just insanity. Read more here. Amy over at the WaPo does a pretty good job at dissecting this insanity!

Oh... btw... check out this poll... for the best Virginia Winery... do you see OASIS on here? LOL Didn't think so.

The other thing I'm wondering out loud is if the reason the Salahi Con Artists weren't at the soul food party at Aunt What's-her-name's house because they've been booted from the show...

The thing to know - is that this show is totally filmed and pieced together all out of order. We know when the Salahi's crashed the White House State Dinner... keep that in perspective while you watch. Also, realize too that this so-called Polo event is a DC disgrace, is a laughingstock when it comes to social events here.

And, while we're at it, and Land Rover has NOTHING to do with the polo match, so every time you watch this show or read this show, realize it's just... ridiculous and bull$$$$.

And finally, while we're at it... there is great Virginia wine. It's from Doukenie. A real winery. Not the shuttered, out for repossession, in foreclosure Oasis winery...

Advanced parenting...


Sometimes, I think that we try to show in our new, online, 'best foot forward' on demand world, this fabricated perception of reality when it comes to parenting. 

In reality, it's not a bed of roses.

It's not perfect.

Beneath the veneer we - specifically we, in the media or who as people who try to live our lives on the web, live imperfect lives. I don't care what you read about on blogs, or on Facebook, or on Twitter, trust me, as a parent, it's not perfect. 

At all.

Today, when I got to Mrs. Sharon's house to pick up Kyla, I was greeted with some interesting news. I won't go into it too deeply, but I will say this:

Kyla was being bratty today at camp. She was being bratty today with Mrs. Sharon. She's been bratty at home in some areas, and lippy, and today, her camp teachers and Mrs. Sharon needed to tell me about it. 

They did. 

I heard how Kyla had been giving sass and lip and attitude to the adults who are charged with her care while I run my mouth for a living. She was outright stubborn on some things, and in  others, she was out and out disrespectful.

So, I called Dana, who was sleeping, and couldn't get with me on a call to deal with discipline for Kyla. Since we couldn't be together to read Kyla the riot act, I went at it alone. 

I explained how she can not do what she was doing. How she has no right or authority to question the adults charged with her well being when I'm away. We talked about how much she has because she does good, and how she should lose things because she's misbehaving. 

We talked about why she felt she needed to act out and what we could do to bring this to an end. 

She got home and went to work to 'earn back' her attitude star. She got herself bathed, and into comfy clothes for bed. She even put her hair into a ponytail. Then, she went to bed with her new Hello Kitty pen and notepad and began writing notes to the people she had been a brat too... 

... to apologize. 

She has a great heart. As I kissed her forehead tonight before sleep ushered her into the land of dreams, I told her I was proud of her for writing notes to Mrs. Sharon and her teachers at camp. In her own heartfelt way, she said she was sorry, and sought forgiveness... which is more than I can say for some adults who have done wrong, screwed, conned,  scammed or cheated people, have done. 

At the end of all of this, I know she knows she did wrong. She has tried in her own way to reach out to make amends. And she's shown she has a tender heart, which is sensitive because of her sweet spirit.

Tomorrow, I'm sure she will continue to make things right. 

Kyla has a sweet, sweet spirit. I'm pretty sure what happened today was an exception and I know it's not the norm. But what really gives me hope when it comes to her is that by first grade, most of your personalities "hard code" traits are present... 

... and hers show that she's fiery, independent, outgoing, confident, yet humble enough to be able to say she's sorry while seeking forgiveness for things she's done wrong. 

Anyway, as a dad, and as a parent, I can tell you that life isn't a bed of roses, no matter what you read on the web, facebook, twitter, etc. It's not pretty, it's not always choreographed and it's not always seamless. Sometimes, its downright ugly... 

... but for me, it's so worth it. 

She's asleep now. I will be in a few. Maybe we're just both tired. After all, 15 hour days do get, well, tiring after a while...

World, I'm sorry... this time for WMATA, the people behind the METRO in DC...

I read this story and was just... moved. So moved. And I had to apologize to all of the world for Washington, DC, again.

This time, it's not about the Salahis. It's about a man, retired, on a pension, who had it slashed thanks to a loophole, because he was diagnosed with cancer.

Last night, this man died. And it's a tragedy.

What we're up against...



Look, I'm all about free speech. I've made a life out of it.

This, however, shows, to me at least, the real obstacles we face when it comes to some of the issues we're facing as a nation.

To me, the Prop 8 thing in California isn't even something which should be litigated in courts. I think the founders of the country, in their infinite wisdom, took care of this when they founded their radical idea of a country called America...

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
These are some of the most potent words ever penned in the history of humanity. A sweeping declaration of the rights of all people - of all sexes, of all orientations, of all faiths and of all color and creed. It's the kindle of the fire which is the very torch of liberty and freedom we bare to the world.

At least that's how I feel about it.

So, in that respect, at least to me, the fact that we're even debating the whole right of people to marry -- is bananas. It's a moot point. It's already been decided. We live in a nation which at it's very core exists to make sure these fundamental rights are extended to all.

Anyway, the debate rages on. As if we don't have larger matters of state which need our attention...

I'm sorry.

If you watched this bullsh*t called the "Real Housewives" of Washington, DC, I would like to,  on behalf of the city I call home, apologize.

This was the most misguided representation of life here that I've ever seen.

Ever.

I've lived here four years now. While that's not a 'lifetime' by any means, I can say that I've lived enough life in this town to know what "real" is. And, what it isn't.

It's not what you watched on this show tonight.

Now, I'm not discounting the people on the show. Some of these people are genuine. They've worked their asses off to succeed in what is a very tough town. They've built what appear to be strong businesses and seem to have earned their place in the community. If you watched this show, you know who they are.

But, there are others... in particular, two others, who make this entire thing an embarrassment.

The Salahis.

They're our national embarrassment. They're the example of everything which is wrong in this country, let alone in this city.

And they're not even from this city.

Let me go ahead and point out what exactly you need to realize was total bovine excrement about this show:

1) What you saw tonight was filmed AFTER the Salahi's crashed the White House State Dinner, breaching security in the bubble and exposing certain flaws which pose a national security threat to the first family of the United States. We know this because the failed Polo Match happened AFTER the "State Dinner" incident.

2) Speaking of the Polo Match which did NOT happen on the National Mall - Land Rover DID NOT sponsor this event. And, it was barely attended. In fact, no one was there. They were begging for people to come up until the day before the event actually happened.

3) The woman who spoke tonight from the "Obama administration" is the woman the Salahi's say "invited" them to the White House on the night of the State Dinner. What you just saw tonight was admissible in court, and probably just cost that woman her job.

4) The Oasis Winery is shuttered. It's all but barren. It's worth nothing, run into the ground by this Salahi dude and his wife.

5) Michaele was a radio station receptionist. In fact, she worked at WKRZ Wilkes-Barre. She never finished college, she might have just attended this school, she was a failed model and a failed small town type who met this Tareq dude who, I take it, promised her the world. Too bad he wasn't paying for any of it. She borrowed all the jewelry she wore in the show, borrowed all the jewelry and clothing you saw her wearing, and as the story on my site at hot995.com kw: toby says, she almost didn't give ANY of it back.

6) We've seen enough in just this first episode (images of the Salahi's in their state dinner clothes from the premiere) to deduce that the party crashing of the State Dinner was a pre-meditated event which was concocted to build publicity for this show and, when the Salahi's basically LIED to Congress, they made the network of NBC/Universal liable in a Federal case.

7) The Salahi's will be arrested by the time the fifth episode airs. If I'm wrong, it will follow, because they're so full of equine excrement that it can't possibly NOT happen.

8) They're pathological liars and proven con artists, who have had cars repossessed, who have had houses foreclosed on,  and who have screwed people - honest people - out of millions of dollars. Oh, but none of it's their fault, and for those they do owe, well, they intend to repay it. Really. Just as soon as the "millions" they're owed come in from whatever crack pipe dream they're believing in.

It's an embarrassment for this town. It's an embarrassment for the people on this show who actually amount to something legitimate in this town.

But most of all, it's an insult to the nameless, faceless mothers... single mothers in Southeast DC... who work two jobs, with three kids, who are raising their families alone in an imperfect world,  but in a city which they think just might provide a little bit of perfection for their children.

DC's a city bigger than this bovine waste. It's a city more dynamic than what Bravo and Universal/Comcast/NBC have attempted to make us believe. It's a city with so much to offer and with so many new and exciting things happening that this show just doesn't do it justice.

Look past the con artists. Get past the fake-rich. Find the real. When you do, the "real" DC will show you what I've found here...

... and that's an energy which inspires me to live a better life.

A life which makes a difference and leaves a mark.

Oh, and PS - the BEST winery in Virginia wine country is Doukenie Winery.

This will piss you off...

I can't put this on the other sites, like HOT/KISS or even the Rock sites because it's too, well, controversial. To bring it up will make everyone uncomfortable and will cause the generally non-deep side of the stations to be, well, more deep than usual. But I have to vent on it and get it out because it has me mentally jacked and ready to go off...

So there was this school where two teens were raped. They report it. The administrators sent 'em back to class. To use 'em as bait.

They were raped again.

The smell in this town...

Sometimes, in this town, the stench of the rhetorical manure stinks to high heaven.

Today, it's rather poignant.

I got this email from the US Chamber of Commerce which basically said we're facing the largest tax increase in history.

Where have I heard this before?

Oh yeah. That's right. They tried to pin this on Clinton. Remember? When he got into office, faced with balancing the budget after 12 years of out of control spending by the previous GOP administration? When he raised taxes on the people who MAKE THE MOST MONEY while easing the burden on the people who make the least and the middle class?

Remember, back when we balanced the budget and brought about the largest peacetime economic expansion in the history of our nation?

So basically, these tax cuts from Bush, which funded the tax rebates he doled out to the American People from the budget surplus - which evaporated mysteriously after 9/11 - are set to expire. And then, the tax rates on the uber-rich will return to a fair share level in my opinion.

Naturally, the rich don't really like it. But it's funny. They bitch and complain yet they don't pay their fare share anyway. Hell, even Warren Buffet says that he pays less in taxes than his personal assistant.

Why?

Loopholes. Good accountants. Judicious exploitation of the tax code. No matter what you call it, there are ways, and the rich hire people to find those ways.

Until you make a law.

Then the law expires and you're faced with having to pay the piper for your decade of decadence. This time is now coming.

Anyway, the stench continues to be out of control in this town. People seem to have amnesia. Like the Chumbawumba song which - strangely enough - is almost about this situation right here. It's about why in the UK one political party tossed out the former ruling party.



This article from the Slate today made me think. Then it made me remember exactly why we're at the place we are today. Why so many people are out of work. Why so many corporations were allowed to exploit so many only to lay them off. Why Wall Street was allowed to make the people 'assume the position' as so many made out with so much money while we bailed them out with trillions in tax payer funds...

Amnesia. Don't let it happen to you. Don't let the people who bankrupted us, and took us into two senseless wars, and who still bend over for Wall Street, get one over on you - and us - again.
