Finding what you're looking for...

U2 is one of my favorite bands of all time.

They have this song called "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For..."

It's a song about a search. About a journey to find that which is so elusive that you have nothing left to do at the end of your search but to write about it.

"But I still Haven't found... what I'm looking for..."

I wonder how this can still at times be the title track for the soundtrack that is my life.

Maybe it's because tonight, I was talking to someone from my past who has found herself in a different place than that which she imagined. A place full of confusion and self doubt with a dose of what we might call a 'remedy' which can be found in that which is in itself incapable of lasting.

Nonetheless, she's not found what she's looking for. Have any of us?

All we can do in this life is try to be what we feel we're supposed to be. To play the part that we feel is the one we're supposed to play. To love. To feel. To embrace. To bring to the forefront in a way which is so exciting that it guides how our lives are to play out. At times, we think we've found this direction in the arms of the temporary, only to find that this momentary distraction serves as a guide to show us where we should be - or to get us back on the path toward what could be.

But we still haven't found what we're looking for.

So we press on. So we walk on. So we go forward, stronger from where we've been and guided from what life has taught us. At times we run and at times we walk, but we move on. We walk on. We navigate the obstacles which life can bring us as we search for that which completes us. And I know this -- in time, we find it.

In this life, I think the journey is the best teacher we could ever hope for.

Here's to finding the lessons in the journey while we seek what we find which we're looking for...

Zhu Zhu Pets...

Are you familiar with this toy? It is a little hampster who has three other little friends called Zhu Zhu pets. They have all sorts of things you can get for 'em, like sleeping bags, hampster wheels and more.

I don't think they poop.

Anyway, I talked to Kyla about this Zhu phenomenon, and she had plenty to tell me about them... and I guess they're gonna be the MUST HAVE present for Christmas this year!!!

SWA again...

Allllllllrighty then... So I just spent almost an hour with Ryan, who is a Rapid Rewards Customer Service agent in Chicago.

Yes. An hour. To book flights for Turkey day for Kyla and me. See, I'm not sold on the fact that Kyla should fly as an unaccompanied minor, so I will fly down to get her and then back so she is here to see family and friends Thanksgiving week! It's awesome. I've never had so much time off and been able to enjoy so much vacation... and I've gotta be honest, this company I work for has been kicking ass when it comes to being flexible so I can travel back and forth to see Kyla while she's with her mom.

Anyway, back to the flights. After going back and forth, trying to decide between BWI or PHI or IAD to fly out of, and after finding that using rapid reward credits was going to be almost an impossibility (except for the .5 of one I used on the flight down for ME), I decided to do a few things on Southwest...

1) Flying Business Class. I'm flying back in Southwest's Business Class because I get double reward credit, a free drink and it was $20 bucks more for me to do so.

2) Booked EB check in for EACH of my flights. Why? Becuz I'm always A that way. AND, because I just couldn't book Business Fare for every leg of my flights down and back, down and back to get Kyla.

Anyway, Ryan didn't have to stay on the phone with me as long as he did. I made him work. If you work in customer service, you know that can SUCK sometimes. But he was on point, kicked ass, took care of my needs, explored cost effective options and helped me to make the best decisions I could make. He didn't bitch while I was like "dude, I'm sorry I'm being needy..." and he told me to forget about it. And, at the end of the bookings, which, well, um... were sorta costly but necessary... I'm flying with an airline which gives a S*** and wanted me to know or feel I was important.

People buy experiences. They'll pay whatever for it as long as the user experience is amazing.

So, Ryan, thank you. For being the example of why so many people like Southwest Airlines. See, some airlines may have slicker options, massage seats, plush leather seats and whatever, but Southwest has something that the others don't have:

Their people. And that makes all the difference. And while the thought of checking out AirTran or some other airline did enter my mind, and while MAYBE I could have found less expensive airfare someplace else, I stuck with my oversized gut and picked loyalty. And, because of Ryan's committment to making sure I was served completely, I'm flying Southwest some more.

It's being rebellious about great service that makes their people who they are. And it's the people who make an organization what it is. Southwest is the Apple Computers of airlines... they're the pirates of the air and rebels who embrace thinking different...

... although I will say that Virgin America is pretty close, but I'm not flying to LAX, San Diego or Oregon this time.

Why Obama is taking his time with Afghanistan...

I've been hearing a bunch of stuff lately about how President Obama is, well, taking too much time with Afghanistan and a strategy there.

I want to make it clear why he is - at least in my opinion.

We went into Afghanistan for all the RIGHT reasons. We were hunting Osama. He was in Afghanistan. We knew this and we pursued him. Overthrew the government which was giving him safe harbor and then, started to hunt for the still-elusive mastermind of terror in the world.

Then we got distracted with Iraq. We marched in and took over a country we had no business being in with intelligence which was based on lies and deception and, honestly, a political need to have 'someone' to fight so that we could 'get a winner' which would extend the military-industrial complex which was now driving the economic engine in the US at the time. At least, that's how I see it.

In doing so, we tossed aside the policy which had goverened the use of US force for, well, as long as I can remember.

We tossed the Powell doctrine. We replaced it with this Bush-Cheney doctrine which convoluted the mission, clouded the objectives, alienated the world and had NO clear exit strategy.

Fast forward nine years. A new President. Iraq is somewhat stable. Somewhat. And Afghanistan, the hunting ground we went into looking for Osama, is drifting toward lawlessness and civil war. Commanders are calling for more troops. Republicans and conservative pundits are saying "send 'em all in..."

And the President, I think, is listening to the greatest general our generation has: He's listening to Colin Powell.

I think the General and the President are putting back into place the tenants of the Powell Doctrine. If you don't know what it is, here's a nutshell view from wikipedia:

The "Powell Doctrine" is a journalist-created term, named after General Colin Powell in the run-up to the 1990-1991 Gulf War. It is based in large part on the Weinberger Doctrine, devised by Caspar Weinberger, former Secretary of Defense and Powell's former boss.


The Powell Doctrine states that a list of questions all have to be answered affirmatively before military action is taken by the United States:

Is a vital national security interest threatened?

Do we have a clear attainable objective?

Have the risks and costs been fully and frankly analyzed?

Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?

Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?

Have the consequences of our action been fully considered?

Is the action supported by the American people?

Do we have genuine broad international support?[1]

As Powell said in an April 1, 2009 interview on The Rachel Maddow Show, the Doctrine denotes the exhausting of all "political, economic, and diplomatic means," which, only if those means prove to be futile, should a nation should resort to military force.

Powell has expanded upon the Doctrine, asserting that when a nation is engaging in war, every resource and tool should be used to achieve decisive force against the enemy, minimizing US casualties and ending the conflict quickly by forcing the weaker force to capitulate. This is well in line with Western military strategy dating at least from Carl von Clausewitz's On War.

Reading this, you see it's clear that Bush the Younger tossed what it is that made Bush the Elder a hero. It's pretty obvious, actually.

So what does all this mean?

I think that we're about to see the results of a well thought out decision by our President. One which meets each of these tenants. One which as a clear exit strategy. One where we take the gloves off, use OVERWHELMING firepower with a CLEAR political objective. And when we turn this noise up... it's gonna be GAME ON...

I guess I'm saying to be patient for just a bit longer. Especially if you're like me and you want to know why the President is just sitting back and taking it in the rear from the conservatives and pundits in DC.

And when this happens, it will pretty much be the STFU we've all been waiting for.

You know, I can't imagine what the President must be feeling. We live our lives. We make decisions about where to get gas, what bills to pay, what to wear out to Georgetown on a Friday night.
The President, meanwhile, is making decisions on whether or not to send thousands of people into harms way. Some of whom may die to fight for and defend our way of life. You know, our cars, our Whole Foods, our Football and our designer jeans. And our Bobbi Brown foundation, or MAC as the case may be.

Could you make the same decisions? Would you make 'em with the snap of a finger?

I'm just asking questions...

God Bless President Obama and our Troops.
 
Wow I feel preachy and academic today. Maybe I should stick to gossip and music and dirt, but, this is the stuff in my head. Thanks for reading.

This Carrie Prejean stuff is getting ridiculous...

When you live in glass houses, you generally shouldn't throw stones. This is true in pretty much every area in life. And, Carrie Prejean, who, by virtue of being a failed Miss America contestant and former Miss California, erected for herself a pretty impressive glass structure.

Then it all came falling down. Look, I'm not going to judge her for her views on Gay Marriage. She's not unlike many others in our country, and she's got a right to her opinion. After all, what is more American than free speech? I don't have to agree with her, but she's got her right to her opinions.

But then, as if some great jihad had been launched against her, she cloaked herself in spirituality. She started blaming "liberals" for an attack on her because she has "religious values" as a 'conservative' woman who happens to be attractive. She compared to herself to "Palin" in the way the "liberal bias in the media" launched attack after attack on her.

It was as if she was saying "don't kick the conservative puppy..." And the conservatives, who are searching for ANYTHING that makes them look less backward, hateful, fearmongering and unpopular right now, embraced her...

... until they found out Ms. Prejean has this different side. A side where she bares all and, ahem, gives some self love and care to her, ahem, "temple..." if you will.

Out came a sex tape. According to her ex, whom SHE made it for ALONE, she asked him to lie and say she made it when she was 17. She went on TV and said she made it when she was 17. And she said she was sorry for her terrible one-time mistake.

Where is Paul Eckman so we can run a test on some microexpressions?

And now, we read this today and find that she's got 30 nude pics and EIGHT sex tapes.

EIGHT.

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.

Count 'em.
She made tapes of herself loving her "temple" EIGHT times.

That's SEVEN plus ONE.

Whoops.

I guess the thing that really has me most fired up this morning is the arrogance. This sort of arrogance, coupled with deception in the name of "GOD" or whatever is exactly what gets the uber-right in trouble. This sort of stuff is exactly why their political party is adrift - even now.

This sort of thing is what makes Christians and conservatives, in particular, look idioitic. If I were a Christian or a conservative, I'd be pissed.

Then I'd tell Ms. Prejean to go away.

But only after I asked her if I could see the videos.

Here we go again. An embrace of pure random...

I had this dream this morning which is why I woke up early. It ended with me running into an ex for the first time in - wow, I don't know how long. I ran into her with as she said some words she had said to me once...

"I'm the best thing that's ever happened to you. A good catch... and you're not usually my type..." she said.

"It's good to see you again..." I replied.

Then I woke up.

Maybe it's just because it's November and Thanksgiving is close. I'm sure my place at that table in Lake Mary has been replaced by another someone.

I try to believe in the someone. But I don't know. Maybe it's 'cause I'll have Kyla with me and because it's November near Thanksgiving. It was the most important holiday they have. And recently, they had to spend it apart as a family because some were traveling or whatever. They were and are a good people. I miss them at times. Especially around this time. But - as a slogan said on a friend's t-shirt on his last day of work said - "it is what it is..."

Anyway.

A friend in the West just had a boy bruise her heart. I don't get it. She's amazing. Why anyone would miscalculate this... is beyond me.

I guess I at times envy those boys. But we lie in the bed we've made for ourselves.

For my friend, I say it will get better. And if it doesn't, call me. And I'll try to make it better. And if I can't, well, at least I'll have tried and we'll try to find someone who can :).

I called my mom to apologize for being an asshole tonight. I was. I won't get into why, but I was. And I've been stewing on it for the last two days and while I have some merits to my argument, the matriarch of my family, the wife of my father and the woman who brought me into the world was not deserving of my words and my frustration the other night. So I humbled myself, and asked her for forgiveness.

Forgiveness. Yes. In every sense of the word. For I was wrong. And the only way I could make it right was to find myself, seek peace and learning through humility, humbling myself and casting my pride aside, and asking her to give me a pass for the way I was with a promise that I will try not to let it happen again.

I get frustrated at times that people in life try to say things like "I'm just trying to provide for OUR daughter" when in fact that daughter they speak of could never be theirs. Especially when the depth of their deception is almost insurmountable. Specifically when they are involved... but are not related.

You get it, right?

I hate that I believed some bold faced lies at times and allowed certain things to happen because I thought I was doing the right thing.

These two specific things haunt me. They're why sleep evades me at times.

And I will NOT allow this person to ever again threaten ANYTHING related to my daughter - including her mom - ever again. Period. So help me God.

Maybe that is wrong. Maybe I should be more understanding. But I've heard about year after year of promise after promise shrouded in deception after deception, and if the cycle can't be broken from within, well, then I swear to God I will break it from outside.

I have a few main responsibilities in life. 1) To be the best dad and defender I can be of my daughter. 2) To make sure we live the best lives we can and are as comfortable as we can be. 3) To do more than just be the best at what I do for a living. 4) To make a difference so that someone can come along after me and do the same thing for a future generation.

I had a wonderful time on a boat off the grid. So much so that I'm doing it again soon.

I know I couldn't do what I do if you - who listen in DC, Dallas, Jax and beyond - didn't allow me to do so. And thank you for this. You don't know me. I don't know you. But you make this all happen.

While we're at it, let me say thanks for something else.

I never - ever - knew that so many of you would find what we do to be so engaging. But for whatever reason, you do, and as a result, the ratings in DC, and in DFW, have been almost surreal. In fact, they're the stuff that you could only dream of when you do what we do in radio.

Thank you.

I swear to you that I don't expect anything from you. I just go into a room and try to share things with you while hoping they're within formatic rules, that they make sense and that you somehow find something that connects with you. For whatever reason, you feel that is happening. And you've given me a gift I can't repay you for.

So all I can say is thank you. And I hope not to let you down.

Tonight, I went into Kyla's room. I'm making a few changes to her room so that it can be a great guest room at times, but most importantly, it's a room Kyla loves when she's with me, since these times are a bit segmented now. New flatscreen tv's. New layout. A new Wii in her room. Toys cleaned up and organized. Ditto clothing. And with a new layout that maximizes space. It's sorta becoming the room I would have wanted if I were a 6 year old girl. LOL.

While in there, I looked back at the books I've got from her last three years at Academy. What great people. What things she learned. What an amazing education.

I thanked God that I'm able to give her a private education when she's with me. She's so much better because of this. I think we laid the best foundation here we could.

You never know as parent if you're doing the best you can do.

You never know in life if you're doing all that you can do.

In life, you miss the things that you thought were the right thing to do.

The other night, when I was with Kyla in Tampa, she told me where to turn to get to her mom's house. She said, "Dad, you have to turn by the apartments that look like....."

She stopped talking. As if she knew that what she would say might not be what I wanted her to say.

"Look like what, Ky?" I said.

"Well they look like... (insert ex girlfriend's apartments name here)...."

"I guess they do, don't they..." I said, outside of Tampa as I turned near a new apartment complex that indeed resembled one which a part of our past once called home lived at.

"Yeah, daddy. We need go this way" she said.

I told Kyla thank you for telling me what navigation failed to tell me. Then I go, "you miss her don't you..."

She goes, "you miss her too sometimes right daddy?"

I go, "yes. but that's part of life."

"Does she miss us?" she asked me.

"I don't know. But she really loved you and I bet that hasn't changed..."

Ky then changed the subject to something related to Care Bears.

The life and words of children are amazing aren't they?

Let me address some popular questions... which continue to be popular questions. In fact, they answer the most asked quesions I've been hit with today...

Yes its wide open. Nights on HOT is too.

No, they haven't ben filled. There's no timeframe. Email my boss, but don't spam and don't send crazy stuff that will close down her email.

Yes I had a procedure. It was my septum and it was necessary. Yes I had lypo and bariatric in cuba this weekend.

Sitting in Fort Lauderdale...

... people watching. It's funny to watch people travel to me. Going through security and TSA screenings is a microexpression training ground. Watching people as they wait is  - well - a study in humanity at times. Some are relaxed. Some are agitated. Others are just... well, I'd say they're just exhausted from travel. As much as I love traveling, I've gotta tell you that it can be tiring. I think a friend made a good comment over the weekend about it...

"It's hard work... doing nothing..."

Well it is.

Here come a few pics... of the boat. I need to do more weekends off the grid like this... it's straight up relaxing and recharging...

This is the living room of the stateroom. Couch pulls out to bed, making this good for two peeps, or a family with a kid, or two couples provided the other couple doesn't mind being on the bitch bed LOL.

The decor - is, well, cheesy. The bed... rocked.

The private balcony was awesome too...

All in all, not bad. More to follow... time to catch a flight...

Well so it goes that I am back in the real world now.... Got some friends and colleagues to see here today and then back to the airport to hop to Orlando then back to DC...

Hello.... from Fort Lauderdale!

It's been a busy week... I just woke up from probably the most sleep I've had since... well...

... I can't remember. Waking up at noon in Florida is a bit surreal...

Saw Mack last night. It was good to see him in action at a club gig... for us that's a relationship that spans our careers... We worked at WLAN in Lancaster almost, what, 10 years ago now? Damn. Anyway, he's doing great... I gotta figure out this RELAX drank he's pushing... LOL

Sometimes it's tough to go mach 5 with your hair on fire without too many breaks... and it takes a toll on you physically and mentally... so I'm falling off the grid for a bit to take care of me. But, of course, I'll blog about it and I'll post some vids and whatnot along the way over the next 3-4 days.

So... tonight, Kelly Myers, a friend for over 10 years now, turned me on to this. She loves radio. I guess she thought -- or knew -- it would appeal to me. 


We both do this in our spare time anyway. LOL. 


Now, I knew Goom was coming...

... but I had nooo idea it was this cool. Content. In the form of music. Made your way. Easier and with better processing (sound) than like live365 or whatever.

Rather than make a station for my own gratification, I made a channel I would want Kyla to be able to listen too in her iPod touch. If I were programming Radio Disney, it would be this cool.
